Hand-Lettering Tutorial

Hand-lettering adds a personal touch to things, whether it be a sign for your home or doodles in your notebook.  It is a skill, though, and like any skill, it takes some practice to get just right. Thankfully, there are talented people out there like our friend Liz who is willing to share her tips and tricks with us!  Without further ado, we’re going to turn it over to her for a simple hand-lettering tutorial that you can do, too.

But you, Israel, are my servant.  You’re Jacob, my first choice, descendants of my good friend Abraham.  I pulled you in from all over the world, called you in from every dark corner of the earth, telling, “You’re my servant, serving on my side.  I’ve picked you.  I haven’t dropped you.”  Don’t panic.  I’m with you.  There’s no need to fear for I’m your God.  I’ll give you strength.  I’ll help you.  I’ll hold you steady, keep a firm grip on you.

                                                                       Isaiah 41:8-10 (MSG)

Have you ever been so overwhelmed that you just think to yourself, “If one more thing gets added to my list, I might die … just fall over and die”?  Lately, my life has been filled with a lot of exciting things! In just the last two months or so, I’ve gone to Haiti and back, started a new position at work and bought a house.  There’s a lot of newness and a lot of things going on in my life!  While getting ready for Haiti, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety that I wouldn’t be safe.  I had myself convinced that all the planes would crash.  That I would get down there safely, but only to return with zika, malaria or typhoid.  that I would get home safely, but only to find my husband had died.  (Goodness!  Take those thoughts captive, Liz!)  During that time, at a worship night at our church, a friend read from the passage above.  Look at all the things that God says that He’ll do for us!  I had included Him in the conversation about Haiti ever since I was asked to go.  He had chosen me to go and I wasn’t trusting Him!

Friends, I don’t know what your crazy lives look like.  Maybe you’re in a really restful place and that’s awesome!  However, if you find yourself paralyzed by your schedule or by fear, rest in the promise that God has your back!  If you feel like you need rest, ask the Lord for rest (Matthew 11:28).  If you feel afraid about the things that He has put under your care, tell Him about it.  It’s okay to tell your Creator that you’re stressed or that you’re overwhelmed or that you’re afraid.  God doesn’t want us to hide anything from Him.  Step into the light and let Him deal with it.  He will fill you with peace and strength!

So, in order to keep that in front of us, I am challenging you to make your own reminder!  Instead of creating a huge 8″ x 10″ piece of work, I decided to just start out easy with a little bookmark/note card.  Here’s what I used for mine; however, if all you have is a Crayola marker and watercolors, that will work, too!

  • Bristol paper (card stock would be fine) cut to any size
  • Pentel Fude Touch Sign Brush Pen in Gray (any marker will work)
  • Akashiya Sai Watercolor Brush Pen in Magenta (I think… it’ll all in Japanese, but any watercolor will work)
  • Watercolor paintbrush
  • Water
  • Paper towel

The great thing about hand-lettering is that you don’t have to take a bunch of classes in order to do it!  Just use your own handwriting style and thicken up your down strokes (i.e. whenever you would draw in a downward motion for any part of the letter, thicken that part).  The Fude Touch Sign Pen that I’m using has a flexible brush-like nib, so if I press the pen down harder, the line thickens for me!  Such fun!

I hope that you enjoy making this little reminder to just stay calm.  God’s got this!  Enjoy!
