Craft Week: DIY Floating Table

One of the best things about the fall season is all of the crafts and DIYs that come along with it! If you haven’t noticed, we have a thing about decorating with pumpkins, using them on the front porch and in the dining room not to mention in vignettes and on mantles in the rest of the house. But what if you don’t have a surface to put them on? Tables take up space and if you love open spaces as much as we do, you don’t want to clutter up your house or apartment with a bunch of end tables. So why not suspend your surface?

Floating shelves are an easy solution. You could build them and attach them to the wall… or you could hang them from the ceiling! All it takes is a piece of wood, some twine and a hook! Oh, and don’t forget your pumpkins!

These wood rounds are available in various sizes at Home Depot and Lowes, and the size you use will depend largely on the size of your area. I purchased a 15″ round from Lowes and stained it using Minwax Dark Walnut stain. To stain, just use an old rag or tee shirt to wipe the stain on, then wipe it off with a dry rag immediately. The composite wood will absorb the stain really quickly, so it doesn’t need to sit long.

Once my round was stained, I used my Ryobi 18V drill to drive three holes in the wood. The holes form a triangle to evenly balance the “table”. These holes are what you’ll thread your twine through.

Once you’ve drilled holes in your wood round, cut three strands of twine to the desired length. I wanted my table to hang around three feet from the ceiling, so I cut three 3′ 6″ pieces of twine. I used Blue Hawk’s twisted jute twine from Lowes, but you can find twine at any craft store, Walmart or Target. Tie a knot at the bottom of one strand and thread it through one of your drilled holes. Do this for the other two pieces of twine as well. The wood piece should rest on the knots of twine if you gather the opposite ends and hold them up. If your knots are too small, just keep knotting!

Gather the three unknotted ends together, loop them over and tie them in a knot. This will be the very top of the table that hangs on your hook. I bought a decorative ceiling hook that I’m pretty sure is used for a plant, but is being repurposed in this case. It blended in with the ceiling on our patio which sold me on it immediately. Here’s the hook I purchased. Just follow the instructions to put it in the ceiling. Then hang your loop over the hook! Ta-da! You made your table!

I had these white canisters… yes, I used a kitchen canister… from Target that I just thought would look gorgeous with flowers in them, and of course, it’s fall so I used mums! These purple mums are mostly white with just a hint of color, which provide a great contrast to the dark wood surface. After I planted the mums in the canister, I added two white mini pumpkins from Kroger. I love white. Can you tell? It’s been the perfect addition to our porch without crowding up the floor and still provides that bright, fall look that I love!

    1. We do, though we have used a few stock photos in past posts. We schedule photo shoots based on the posts we know we have upcoming and take them all at the same time if possible. I shoot with a Nikon D300 right now which is what I used for all of the photos in this post. Great question!

  1. So very cute, I love the floating table! Not sure if my kiddos will leave it alone but I could just make sure there is no glass on it!

    1. My two-year-old is totally into everything, so I understand, but I hung these strategically so she couldn’t get to them easily. Older kids… we’re not quite there yet, but your no-glass idea is a great one!!!

  2. This is totally decor that I would have in my home. Its chic and classic and really gorgeous. I might need to try out this DIY! Love the final product! And the white pumpkins. 🙂

  3. Your table brought back so many memories! Back in teh 70s, when my husband and I were first married, we made these tables for our apt. We also made a couple of macrame tables, too. Such memories!

  4. Oh my gosh it’s so beautiful and I want this so badly, but there are power tools involved… LOL! I think I will bravely and boldly try this when the dude is around for back up. I have a space similar to this one, where this floating table would be perfect… Yep, I’m going to try this one.

    1. Only a drill! Super easy to use!!! If you feel intimidated about using power tools, head over to Shanty 2 Chic’s site. They walk you through step by step! That’s how I learned 🙂

  5. I love how easy this hanging table is to make! It’s classy and it adds a certain charm to the room which I love! I’m definitely going to copy this idea, so creatively thought of!

  6. That floating table is just beautiful! What a great and easy idea! I can’t wait to see how you decorate it throughout the year.

  7. Wow! This is so cute! It looks so simple! I’m all about crafts I can make all by myself without my husband’s help! This would be perfect for our new house!

    1. Thank you so much!!! I made another one so they’re in opposite corners of the sun room, and they’re my absolutely favorite things out there right now! The space saver is probably the biggest win.

  8. I’ve been seeing this DIY project on Pinterest lately. I love the look! It also looks effortless easy to create. 🙂 – HilLesha

    1. Ha! I understand. My daughter knows they’re “no nos”. She tested at first, but she’s got it now. It also helps that they’re behind the bench, so she has to do some climbing and moving around in order to get to it in the first place 🙂 I may or may not have done that on purpose…

    1. Thank you so much for your sweet compliment! Tiny white pumpkins are our favorites this time of year! They’re so versatile!
